Iconostasis in the arch bishop"s palace An iconostasis is a wall of icons and religious paintings, separating the nave from the sanctuary in a church. Iconostases are typically found in Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic churches. The iconostasis, and the entire church covered with icons, is a major manifestation of the Byzantine art. The iconostasis typically has three levels, the highest and most holy level is the Royal Doors in the center, which are the main focus of veneration. On either side of the Royal Doors are the Deacon Doors. The lowest level consists of the side doors which are opened to allow entrance and exit from the nave to the sanctuary. The iconostasis is an important part of the architecture of the church, and is often decorated with intricate designs and symbols. It can also be found in the archbishop"s palace, where it serves as a reminder of the importance of the spiritual life and the sanctity of the Church.
