Holy Martyr Anatoly of Kiev Hagiography Anatoly was born in Kiev in the late 10th century. He was the son of a priest named Theodore. He was tonsured a monk at the Kiev Caves Lavra and received the monastic name Anatoly. Anatoly was a model of piety and was known for his asceticism and strict adherence to the monastic rule. He was also known for his charity and was always eager to help the poor and the needy. Anatoly was arrested during the reign of Vladimir I of Kiev for his refusal to renounce Christianity and was tortured and killed. According to tradition, he was thrown into the Dnieper River and his body was never recovered. Veneration Anatoly is venerated as a martyr and saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. His feast day is celebrated on October 14.
