Saint Simeon Stylites, the Elder Saint Simeon Stylites, the Elder (; ; c. 390 – 2 September 459) was a Syriac ascetic saint who achieved notability for living 37 years on a small platform on top of a pillar near Aleppo in Syria. Several other stylites later followed his model. He is known formally as Saint Simeon Stylites the Elder to distinguish him from Simeon Stylites the Younger, Simeon of Thessaloniki, and Simeon of Emesa. Biography Simeon was born in Sis, Cappadocia, and was the son of a shepherd. He was brought up by an uncle, who was an ascetic monk living in the desert near Chalcedon. At the age of 16, Simeon left his home and went to live with his uncle. After spending several years in the desert, Simeon sought out a more extreme form of asceticism. He eventually chose to live atop a pillar near Aleppo. He lived on the pillar for 37 years, surviving storms and earthquakes. He was fed by a ladder, which was pulled up after each meal. The height of the pillar is believed to have varied between 3.5 and 5.5 meters. Simeon"s platform was large enough for him to stand and move about. He is said to have preached from the platform.
