Holy Martyr Sophia The Holy Martyr Sophia (, ) is a Christian saint, venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church and in the Roman Catholic Church. She is the patron saint of wisdom, courage, and strength. The story of Sophia is found in the apocryphal book The Martyrdom of St. Sophia and her Three Daughters Faith, Hope and Love. According to the story, Sophia was a wealthy and pious Christian woman living in Rome during the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. She was married to a pagan man named Publius and had three daughters, Faith, Hope and Love. When Publius died, Sophia converted her home into a place of Christian worship and instruction. When the Roman authorities heard of this, they arrested Sophia and her daughters and brought them before the emperor. He ordered them to sacrifice to the Roman gods, but they refused. The emperor then ordered them to be tortured and killed. As they were being tortured, the three daughters sang hymns of praise to God. Finally, the emperor had them thrown into a furnace, where they died. Sophia is remembered as a martyr for her faith and courage. She is often depicted in art as a woman surrounded by flames, with her three daughters at her side. Her feast day is celebrated on September 17 in the Eastern Orthodox Church and on October 1 in the Roman Catholic Church.
