Holy Martyr Alla of Constantinople Hagiography Alla was born in Constantinople in the 11th century to a family of pious Christians. Her parents were Theodore and Theodosia. Her father was a deacon in the Church of St. George. Alla was an only child and her parents devoted much time to her spiritual education. When Alla was nine years old, her parents died and she was left an orphan. She was adopted by a pious widow, who continued to teach her about the Christian faith. Alla was especially devoted to the Virgin Mary and prayed to her daily. At the age of sixteen, Alla was betrothed to a young man named Michael. Michael was a Christian, but he was also a soldier in the Byzantine army. Alla refused to marry him because she wanted to remain a virgin and dedicate her life to God. Michael was furious and threatened to have Alla arrested if she did not marry him. Alla refused and was arrested and brought before the Emperor. The Emperor was impressed by her courage and faith and offered her a choice: marry Michael or be executed. Alla chose death and was beheaded. Veneration Alla is venerated as a martyr and a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Her feast day is celebrated on August 8. She is also remembered in the Roman Catholic Church on October 15.
