Meeting of the Lord The Meeting of the Lord (, , ) is a Christian feast day celebrated forty days after the Nativity of Jesus to commemorate the presentation of Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem in accordance with Jewish custom. The feast is sometimes called the Presentation of the Lord, and in some Western liturgical churches, it is known as Candlemas. The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates the feast as one of its twelve Great Feasts, and in the liturgical churches of the West, it is classified as a Principal Feast. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, the feast is celebrated on February 2, the fortieth day after Christmas. In the Roman Catholic Church, the feast is celebrated on February 2 or the Sunday between February 2 and February 8. In the Church of England, the feast is celebrated on February 2 or the Sunday between February 2 and February 8. The feast is not mentioned in the Bible, but is based on the account of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple in the Gospel of Luke. According to the gospel, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem forty days after his birth to complete Mary"s ritual purification after childbirth, and to perform the redemption of the firstborn (the pidyon haben). At the Temple, they encountered Simeon, who had been told by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. Simeon then prophesied to Mary about Jesus" destiny, and Mary and
