E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 2 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a 1982 American science fiction film produced and directed by Steven Spielberg. It tells the story of Elliott (Henry Thomas), a lonely boy who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed "E.T.", who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings help E.T. return to his home planet, while attempting to keep him hidden from the government. The film was written by Melissa Mathison and features special effects by Carlo Rambaldi and Dennis Muren. It stars Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, and Robert MacNaughton as the children, and Drew Barrymore as Elliott"s younger sister, Gertie. The concept for E.T. originated from an imaginary friend Spielberg created after his parents" divorce in 1960. In 1980, Spielberg met Mathison and developed a new story from the stalled sci-fi horror film project Night Skies. Filming took place from September to December 1981 on a budget of US$10.5 million. E.T. was released on June 11, 1982, and grossed over $792 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Jurassic Park in 1993. It was the second highest-grossing film of 1982, behind Tootsie. It was met with critical acclaim, and is often cited as one of the greatest films ever made. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects,
for CNC and 3D printers.
