The character was created by writer Mike Friedrich and writer-artist Jim Starlin, and first appeared in Iron Man #55 (cover dated Feb. 1973). Thanos is one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel Universe and has clashed with many heroes including the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. Thanos is a member of the Eternals, a race of superhumans in the Marvel Universe. He was born with the Deviant Syndrome, making him look and be different from other Eternals. He is obsessed with death and has conducted horrific experiments in his quest to understand and conquer death. Thanos is known for his intelligence and his incredible strength. He has the ability to manipulate energy, has telepathic abilities, and can teleport. He is also immortal due to a curse by Death itself. His most famous storyline involves his quest to obtain the Infinity Stones, powerful artifacts that grant their user control over specific aspects of existence: space, reality, power, soul, mind, and time. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos is portrayed by Josh Brolin. He serves as the main antagonist in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), where his goal is to wipe out half of all life in the universe to save it from overpopulation and resource depletion.
