Tonto Tonto is a fictional character, the Native American companion of the Lone Ranger, a popular American Western character created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker. Tonto is a Native American of the Potawatomi tribe, and first appeared on the radio program The Lone Ranger in 1933. He was played by actor John Hart from 1952 to 1954, and by Jay Silverheels from 1949 to 1957. In the 2013 film The Lone Ranger, Tonto is portrayed by Johnny Depp.
