Abul-Abbas elephant famous animal Abul-Abbas was an elephant given to Charlemagne by Harun al-Rashid, the Abbasid Caliph of Baghdad, in the year 797. It is said that the elephant was a symbol of the friendship between the two rulers. Abul-Abbas was the first living elephant to be seen in Europe since the days of the Roman Empire. The elephant was a major attraction in the court of Charlemagne, and it is said that the emperor was so impressed by Abul-Abbas that he gave him the title of “Imperial Elephant”. Abul-Abbas was eventually put to death in 810, after it became too difficult to care for him.
