It was developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ on March 1, 2011. The game takes place in the grim, war-ravaged world of Games Workshop"s Warhammer 40,000 universe – a dark, futuristic, fantasy setting where armies of technologically advanced warriors, fighting machines and hordes of implacable aliens wage constant war. Retribution offers a campaign for every faction in the game, including the Imperial Guard. The campaign takes place on the planet Aurelia, which has reappeared from the Warp after being lost for millennia. The player can choose to command any of the six factions, each of which offers a unique storyline and perspective on the events. The game also features a multiplayer mode, where players can battle against each other or team up to fight against AI opponents. The multiplayer mode includes new units and maps, as well as an improved matchmaking system. Retribution received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its gameplay, graphics, and story, but criticized its lack of innovation compared to previous entries in the series.
