The parable is written in the form of a dialogue between a man from the country and a gatekeeper to a law that the man wishes to gain access to. The gatekeeper tells the man that he may not enter the law at the present time, but that he may wait in the hope that one day he will be allowed to enter. The parable has been interpreted in various ways, but is generally seen as an allegory for the difficulty of gaining access to the law and justice.
