The parable is narrated by a man from the country who tells of his encounter with a gatekeeper blocking the entrance to a law. The man is told by the gatekeeper that he cannot enter the law until he is given permission, but he is never given permission and dies waiting. The parable is an allegory for the futility of attempting to gain access to a higher power or justice, and the inability of humans to comprehend the divine.
