Cabaret 1972 7 .7 Cabaret is a 1972 American musical drama film directed by Bob Fosse and starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York, and Joel Grey. Set in 1931 Berlin, the film is loosely based on the 1966 Broadway musical of the same name, which was adapted from Christopher Isherwood"s 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin. The film follows American cabaret performer Sally Bowles (Minnelli) and her relationship with British academic Brian Roberts (York), as well as the relationship between the master of ceremonies (Grey) and his companion, Natalia Landauer (Helmut Griem). The film won eight Academy Awards, including Best Director, Best Actress (Minnelli), and Best Supporting Actor (Grey). It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Costume Design. Cabaret is widely considered to be one of the greatest musical films of all time.
