Joaqun Sorolla 4 Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida was a renowned Spanish painter known for his detailed and luminous depictions of landscapes, historical events, and portraits. Born on February 27, 1863, in Valencia, Spain, Sorolla"s talent for painting was recognized early on and he was admitted to the Fine Arts Academy of San Carlos at a young age. Sorolla"s work is characterized by his masterful use of light and color, earning him the nickname "Master of Light". He is often compared to the French impressionists due to his similar painting style, but Sorolla"s work is generally more detailed and realistic. One of his most famous works is "Sad Inheritance", a painting depicting disabled children bathing at the sea in Valencia. This painting won him the Grand Prix and a medal of honor at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and at the National Exhibition in Madrid in 1901. Sorolla"s other notable works include "The Horse’s Bath", "Walk on the Beach", and "Sewing the Sail". His work was widely exhibited during his lifetime and continues to be celebrated today. The Sorolla Museum in Madrid, which was originally his house, displays a large collection of his paintings. Sorolla died on August 10, 1923, in Cercedilla, Spain. Despite his death, his influence on the art world continues to be felt, with his paintings being held in high regard and displayed in major museums around the world.
