Mother of God of Bethlehem The Mother of God of Bethlehem (, ) is a type of Russian icon of the Virgin Mary. History The icon is believed to have been painted by St. Luke the Evangelist. According to tradition, it was brought to Kiev in the 11th century and then to Vladimir in the 12th century. It is believed to have been kept in the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir until 1238, when it was moved to Moscow. The icon was kept in the Dormition Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin until 1538, when it was moved to the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos in the Kitay-Gorod. In 1653, it was moved to the Church of the Intercession of the Virgin on the Moat. In 1721, it was moved to the Cathedral of the Archangel Michael in the Moscow Kremlin. In 1812, the icon was taken to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Saint Petersburg, where it was kept until 1917. In 1918, it was moved to the Russian Museum. Description The icon depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a throne, holding the Christ Child in her arms. The Virgin is surrounded by a halo of light, and the Child is surrounded by a mandorla.
