E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a 1982 American science fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Melissa Mathison. It stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore. The story follows a young boy named Elliott (Thomas) who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed "E.T.", who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings help E.T. return to his home planet, while attempting to keep him hidden from the government. The film was released on June 11, 1982, and grossed over $792 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time, a record it held for 11 years until Jurassic Park was released in 1993. It won four Academy Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects, and was nominated for six more, including Best Picture. It was re-released in 1985 and 2002, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time.
