jimi hendrix 1 Jimi Hendrix, born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27, 1942, was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He is often considered one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15 and in 1961, enlisted in the U.S. Army, but was discharged the following year. He moved to Clarksville, Tennessee soon after and began playing gigs on the Chitlin" Circuit, earning a place in the Isley Brothers" backing band and later with Little Richard, with whom he continued to work through mid-1965. In late 1966, Hendrix"s three-year record deal with producer Ed Chalpin was discovered, which nearly led to the breakup of the Experience. The contract had to be resolved before Hendrix could return to recording. In 1967, his first album "Are You Experienced" was released, which was a critical and commercial success. Hendrix"s innovative style of combining fuzz, feedback and controlled distortion created a new musical form. His flamboyant stage presence and ability to play the guitar with his teeth or behind his back added to his legend. Hendrix died at the age of 27 in London under controversial circumstances.
