Joaqun Sorolla 1 Joaquín Sorolla was a renowned Spanish painter, known for his mastery in portraying light and water in his works. He was born on February 27, 1863, in Valencia, Spain. Sorolla"s style was a variant of Impressionism and was particularly influenced by the sea and sunlight of his native land. Sorolla"s most famous works include "Walk on the Beach", "The Horse’s Bath", and "Sad Inheritance". His large-scale, monumental works, known as the "Vision of Spain", depict regional customs and dress, and are displayed at the Hispanic Society of America in New York City. Sorolla"s talent for painting the effects of light on water and on various surfaces is particularly noted. His ability to capture the shimmering sparkle of the Mediterranean sea was unmatched. He painted very rapidly and with great vitality, which resulted in a sense of spontaneity and freshness in his works. Sorolla died on August 10, 1923, in Cercedilla, Spain. Despite his death, his works continue to be celebrated and admired, solidifying his place as one of the most important and influential painters in Spanish art history.
