Protopolybia Protopolybia is a genus of social wasps found in the subfamily Vespinae. They are native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, including Mexico, Central America, and South America. The genus is composed of three species: Protopolybia exigua, Protopolybia monticola, and Protopolybia mexicana. These wasps are relatively small, with a body length of about 10–12 mm. They are black and yellow in color, with the abdomen and thorax being yellow and the head and legs being black. Protopolybia species build large, open nests made of paper-like material. These nests are typically found in the eaves of buildings or in trees. The nests are composed of multiple cells, each of which contains an egg and a larva. The adults feed on nectar and pollen, and the larvae feed on a variety of insects. Protopolybia species are important predators of pest insects, such as aphids and caterpillars.
