Mother of God Hodegetria , The Mother of God Hodegetria is a Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary, which was painted in the 11th century. It is one of the most famous and venerated icons of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and is believed to have been painted by the Evangelist Luke. The name "Hodegetria" means "She Who Shows the Way," and the icon depicts the Virgin Mary pointing to her son Jesus Christ as the way to salvation. The icon is often referred to as the "Hodegetria of Smolensk," as it was discovered in the city of Smolensk in the 17th century. It is believed to have miraculous powers, and is said to have been responsible for the protection of the city from attack. The icon is now kept in the Cathedral of the Assumption in Moscow.
