Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon The Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon (Παντελεήμων) is one of the most beloved and venerated saints in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He is often referred to as the "Great Martyr Panteleimon" or simply "St. Panteleimon". He is the patron saint of physicians, surgeons, and pharmacists. Panteleimon was born in the 3rd century in Nicomedia (present-day İzmit, Turkey). He was the son of Eustorgius, a Roman army officer, and Eubula, a Christian. He was raised in a Christian home and received a good education. He was known for his compassion and healing abilities. He was a gifted physician and was even able to cure the blind. At the age of twenty-five, Panteleimon was arrested for his Christian faith and brought before the Emperor Maximian. He was tortured and offered the chance to renounce his faith and save his life, but he refused. He was then beheaded and became a martyr for the Christian faith. Panteleimon is often depicted in icons with a halo of light around his head and holding a cross and a staff. He is also sometimes shown with a book or a jar of medicine.
