Joaqun Sorolla Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida was a Spanish painter. He was born on February 27, 1863, in Valencia, Spain and died on August 10, 1923. Sorolla excelled in the painting of portraits, landscapes, and monumental works of social and historical themes. His most typical works are characterized by a dexterous representation of the people and landscape under the sunlight of his native land. Sorolla"s work is represented in museums throughout Spain, Europe, and America, and in many private collections in Europe and America. In 1933, J. Paul Getty purchased ten Impressionist beach scenes done by Sorolla, several of which are now housed in the J. Paul Getty Museum. In 1909, Sorolla exhibited his work in the United States for the first time at the Hispanic Society of America in New York City. The exhibition comprised 356 paintings, many of which were sold. The exhibition was the most successful in the history of the Society and introduced the artist and his work to the American public. Sorolla"s style was a variant of Impressionism and whose best works, painted in the open air, vividly portray the sunny seacoast of Valencia. He was one of the most famous and well-respected artists of his time.
