jim henson 1 Jim Henson was an American puppeteer, animator, and filmmaker best known for creating The Muppets, an internationally recognized franchise that includes television shows like Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, as well as numerous films. Henson was born on September 24, 1936, in Greenville, Mississippi, and died on May 16, 1990. Henson"s career in puppetry began in high school, when he created Sam and Friends, a five-minute puppet show for WRC-TV. The characters on Sam and Friends were some of the first Muppets, and the show included a prototype of Henson"s most famous character, Kermit the Frog. In the late 1960s, Henson was asked to contribute to Sesame Street, a new children"s television program. His Muppets, including characters like Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, and Cookie Monster, became central to the show and helped it become a cultural phenomenon. In 1976, Henson created The Muppet Show, which became a global hit and introduced characters like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Gonzo. The success of The Muppet Show led to multiple films, including The Muppet Movie, The Great Muppet Caper, and The Muppets Take Manhattan. Henson also worked on other projects outside of the Muppet franchise, including the fantasy films The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, both of which he directed. He also founded the
