jim henson 4 Jim Henson was an American puppeteer, animator, cartoonist, actor, inventor, filmmaker, and screenwriter who achieved worldwide notice as the creator of The Muppets (1955–) and Fraggle Rock (1983–1987); and as the director of The Dark Crystal (1982) and Labyrinth (1986). He was also the founder of The Jim Henson Company, the Jim Henson Foundation, and Jim Henson"s Creature Shop. Henson was born on September 24, 1936, in Greenville, Mississippi. He was introduced to puppetry at a young age, and it became a lifelong passion. In 1955, while attending the University of Maryland, College Park, he created Sam and Friends, a five-minute puppet show for WRC-TV. The characters he created for that show eventually evolved into the Muppets. Henson"s Muppets became a staple of American television, appearing on Sesame Street when it premiered in 1969 and later starring in their own series, The Muppet Show, which debuted in 1976 and was broadcast in more than 100 countries. The Muppets have since remained a popular media franchise, spawning films, television series, and other merchandise. In addition to his work with the Muppets, Henson also ventured into other areas of television and film. He created the fantasy films The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, both of which have become cult classics. He also founded
