jim henson 6 Jim Henson was an American puppeteer, animator, cartoonist, actor, inventor, filmmaker, and screenwriter who achieved worldwide notice as the creator of The Muppets (1955– ) and Fraggle Rock (1983–1987); and as the director of The Dark Crystal (1982) and Labyrinth (1986). He was also the founder of Jim Henson"s Creature Shop, an internationally recognized puppet-building, special effects, and computer animation firm. Henson was born on September 24, 1936, in Greenville, Mississippi. He developed a love for puppetry at a young age and created his first puppet show for a local TV station while still in high school. He later attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where he created a five-minute puppet show called Sam and Friends. Henson"s big break came in 1969 when he was asked to create characters for a new educational TV show for children, Sesame Street. The show was a huge success and Henson"s characters, including Big Bird, Elmo, and Cookie Monster, became beloved figures for children around the world. In 1976, Henson created The Muppet Show, which featured a cast of eccentric and endearing characters, including Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Gonzo. The show was a hit and won numerous awards during its five-year run. Henson continued to innovate in the field of puppetry and animation
