jim henson 7 Jim Henson was a renowned American puppeteer, animator, cartoonist, actor, inventor, filmmaker, and screenwriter who achieved worldwide fame as the creator of The Muppets (1955–) and Fraggle Rock (1983–1987). He was also the puppeteer for Sesame Street characters like Big Bird and Cookie Monster. Henson"s other notable work includes his role as a puppeteer in the Dark Crystal (1982) and Labyrinth (1986). Henson was born on September 24, 1936, in Greenville, Mississippi. He developed an interest in puppetry at a young age and created his first puppet show for a local TV station while in high school. He later studied theater arts at the University of Maryland, where he created Sam and Friends, a five-minute puppet show that was the precursor to The Muppets. Henson"s Muppets first appeared on Sesame Street when it debuted in 1969, helping to revolutionize children"s television by combining educational content with entertainment. The Muppets, including characters like Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and Fozzie Bear, later starred in multiple television series and films. Henson was also known for his technological innovations in puppetry, such as remote control-operated puppets, and his efforts to promote positive social values.
