Born on September 24, 1936, in Greenville, Mississippi, Henson developed a love for television and film at an early age. He created his first puppet, Kermit the Frog, in the mid-1950s while attending the University of Maryland. Henson"s Muppets first gained recognition in the 1960s on the children"s educational television show, Sesame Street. The Muppets, a collection of puppet characters, became beloved figures in American pop culture. Characters like Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Elmo became household names. In 1976, Henson produced The Muppet Show, a variety series that featured his Muppets in comedic sketches and musical numbers. The show was a huge success and won numerous awards during its five-year run. Henson also ventured into filmmaking, directing movies like The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. He continued to work on various projects until his untimely death in 1990. Despite his passing, Henson"s legacy continues to live on through his creations. His company, The Jim Henson Company, continues to produce films and television shows featuring The Muppets.
