joaquin sorolla 2 Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida was a renowned Spanish painter known for his distinct style that combined the tradition of the old masters with the luminosity of Impressionism. He was born on February 27, 1863, in Valencia, Spain, and died on August 10, 1923. Sorolla"s work is characterized by his masterful handling of light and shadow, his ability to capture the fleeting effects of sunlight, and his skill in depicting the human figure in motion. He is often referred to as a "painter of light" due to his exceptional ability to capture the play of light on different surfaces. Sorolla"s most famous works include "Sad Inheritance" (1899), which won the Grand Prix and a medal of honor at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900, and "The Bath" (1908), which is considered one of his masterpieces. His series of paintings depicting regional customs and traditional dress from different parts of Spain, known as the "Vision of Spain" series, is also highly regarded. Sorolla"s influence can be seen in the work of many later artists, and his paintings are held in major museums and collections around the world, including the Museo Sorolla in Madrid, which was his former home and studio. Despite his death nearly a century ago, Sorolla"s work continues to be celebrated for its vitality, luminosity, and sheer beauty.
