jim henson 2 Jim Henson was a renowned puppeteer, animator, and filmmaker, best known for creating the Muppets. He was born on September 24, 1936, in Greenville, Mississippi, and grew up in Leland, Mississippi, and Hyattsville, Maryland. Henson began working as a puppeteer in high school, creating puppets for a Saturday morning children"s show. He later attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where he created Sam and Friends, a five-minute puppet show for WRC-TV. The characters on Sam and Friends were forerunners of the Muppets, and the show included a prototype of Henson"s most famous character, Kermit the Frog. In 1969, Henson joined the children"s educational television program Sesame Street where he helped to develop characters for the series. He and his creative team also created several Muppet characters like Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, and Oscar the Grouch. The success of Sesame Street spawned The Muppet Show, which featured Muppets created by Henson. The show was a huge success and led to several spin-off movies and television series. In addition to his work on Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, Henson also directed and produced fantasy films like The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, both of which have become cult classics. Henson"s work has been recognized with several awards, including Emmys, Grammys, and a Peabody Award.
