joaquin sorolla 4 Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida was a Spanish painter, born on February 27, 1863 in Valencia, Spain. He is most known for his detailed and brightly lit portraits and landscapes, often depicting people in traditional Spanish attire or engaging in everyday activities. Sorolla"s style is often compared to that of the Impressionists, although he himself considered his work to be more in line with the Realist tradition. Sorolla"s most famous works include "Sad Inheritance," a poignant depiction of disabled children bathing in the sea, and "The Horse"s Bath," which shows a horse being led into the sea for a bath. His series of portraits of his family, particularly his wife and children, are also highly regarded. In addition to his painting, Sorolla was also a successful academic and was known for his teaching abilities. He taught at the School of Fine Arts in Valencia and later in Madrid. His influence can be seen in the works of many later Spanish artists. Sorolla died on August 10, 1923 in Cercedilla, Spain. His home in Madrid is now the Museo Sorolla, which houses many of his paintings and other works. Despite his death nearly a century ago, Sorolla"s work continues to be celebrated and studied by art enthusiasts around the world.
