joaquin sorolla 5 Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida was a renowned Spanish painter, best known for his detailed, luminous depictions of the landscapes and people of his homeland. Born on February 27, 1863, in Valencia, Spain, Sorolla showed an early interest in art and began studying at the age of 9. His work is characterized by his masterful handling of light and shadow, with a particular emphasis on the effects of sunlight. He is often compared to the French Impressionists, although his style is distinctly his own. Sorolla"s paintings are filled with vibrant, natural colors and a sense of life and movement. One of his most famous works is "Sad Inheritance," a painting depicting disabled children bathing at the sea in Valencia. This painting won him the Grand Prix and a medal of honor at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900, and later the medal of honor at the National Exhibition in Madrid in 1901. Another notable work is the series of paintings known as "The Vision of Spain," which he was commissioned to create for the Hispanic Society of America in New York City. This monumental series consists of 14 large-scale murals depicting scenes from various regions of Spain. Despite his success, Sorolla"s life was marked by personal tragedy. His parents died when he was just two years old, leaving him to be raised by his aunt and uncle. Later in life, he was deeply affected by the death of his eldest child, Maria, who
