jim davis 3 Jim Davis is an American cartoonist, best known as the creator of the comic strip Garfield. Born on July 28, 1945, in Marion, Indiana, Davis grew up on a small farm with his parents, James and Betty Davis, and his younger brother, Dave. Davis had a passion for drawing from a young age and spent his childhood doodling and creating characters. He attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he studied art and business. After graduating, Davis worked for an advertising agency before deciding to pursue his dream of becoming a cartoonist. In 1978, Davis created Garfield, a comic strip about a lazy, lasagna-loving cat, his owner Jon Arbuckle, and Jon"s dog, Odie. The strip was initially published in 41 newspapers but quickly gained popularity and is now syndicated in over 2,500 newspapers worldwide and translated into multiple languages. In addition to the comic strip, Garfield has been adapted into several television shows, movies, and merchandise. Davis still continues to work on the comic strip, along with a team of assistants. Davis has received numerous awards for his work, including the National Cartoonist Society Humor Comic Strip Award and the Elzie Segar Award. Despite his success, Davis remains humble and often credits his success to the universal appeal of his character, Garfield.
