jim davis 4 Jim Davis is an American cartoonist, best known as the creator of the comic strip Garfield. Born on July 28, 1945, in Marion, Indiana, Davis grew up on a small farm with his parents, James and Betty Davis, and his brother, Dave. He developed a love for drawing at a young age, and after high school, he attended Ball State University where he studied art and business. After graduating, Davis worked for an advertising agency before creating his first comic strip, Gnorm Gnat. The strip did not achieve much success, leading Davis to create Garfield in 1978. Garfield, featuring a lazy, lasagna-loving cat, quickly became a hit and is now syndicated in roughly 2,580 newspapers and journals, making it the world"s most widely syndicated comic strip. The success of the comic strip led to several animated television shows, movies, and a vast amount of merchandise. In addition to Garfield, Davis has also created the comic strip U.S. Acres, which ran from 1986 to 1989. Despite his success, Davis has remained grounded, continuing to live and work in Indiana. He is married to Jill Davis, and they have two children.
